Fitness requires a combination of physical and mental fitness. In fact, it is, in our present knowledge, impossible to determine where physical fitness ends and mental fitness starts.
It is also impossible to state with any certainty the influence a player’s physical state has upon his mental state, or vice versa. The two are not only inter-related, but they are also woven together like a golden thread through the whole of soccer.
Fatigue causes technique to deteriorate, concentration to lapse, and judgement to falter. Thus, skill is not a reliable asset unless it is accompanied by fitness.
Creating high performance requires inner conditioning tests for players to pass, which will be regarded as a strong foundation to build on with regard to all other requirements of the game.
For example, when a player pursues a diagonal run and receives a pass, he controls the ball under pressure without support, then he tries to dribble an opponent and to fire a shot. In this example, we can easily see the connection between speed of movement and the mind.
